The tourist trains climb to Paltin station (km 21,6), about two hours away from Vișeu de Sus, where a place for halt has been arranged. Until the return of the train to Paltin, the tourists can spend a little time in the nature or admire the sight from the platform located on the cliff nearby.
The complete route measures about 50 km from Vişeu de Sus to the terminal station Comanu. Starting from Vişeu de Sus to the forest, in Delta-Novăţ, where the track forms a triangle for branching, the railway branches out to the right on a distance of almost 7 km towards Novăţ Valley, and to the left, along Vaser River, the main line continues to Comanu. Through Cozia, Botizu, Făina and up to Comanu, the railway passes through a spectacular area from the point of view of the landscape. In Făina, upstream from the station you can visit a chapel built by Austrian colonists, dedicated to Princess Elisabeth ("Sissi").At 5 km after Făina, at Măcârlău, the railway crosses the remains of a dam, which was robust in other times, in the past it had an important function in the rafting process.
Mocănița on Vaserului Valley
Since 1932, the Forestry Railway Vișeu de Sus has functioned almost without stop, being the last one of this kind in Europe which is still being used for the transport of wood. Since 2000 steam trains for tourists have regularly travelled on Vaserului Valley. The season starts in the spring and ends in autumn (May-October). The highest altitude of the railway is in Comanu area 1.100 m, the departure from Vișeu de Sus being at altitude 600 m.
